7 mistakes first-time cruisers make (and how to avoid them)

Taking your first cruise is exciting! Imagine waking up in a new destination, enjoying world class entertainment, and having meals included all while your hotel travels with you. But first-time cruisers often make a few common mistakes that can lead to unnecessary stress and added expenses.

Here are seven mistakes to avoid so you can have the best cruise vacation possible.

1. Waiting Too Long to Book

Many first time cruisers assume waiting for a last minute deal will save money. While that occasionally happens, popular sailings, cabin categories, and family friendly ships often sell out well in advance. If you have a large family like I do and need connecting cabins it is very crucial to book as early as possible because those staterooms get taken very early especially if you are wanting a certain deck and certain stateroom category.

How to Avoid It:
Book early, especially for Alaska cruises, holiday sailings, spring break, and summer vacations. Booking early usually gives you the best selection and often the best pricing.

2. Choosing the Wrong Cabin

Not all cabins are created equal. Some travelers automatically choose the cheapest cabin without considering location, noise levels, or personal preferences. Picking guarantee just to save a few bucks. While that is fine if you are not picky at all where you want to be on the ship it is a great way to save. If you are wanting a certain deck or wanting mid ship it is not guaranteed you will get that. The cruise line picks your stateroom for you. If you want a balcony ocean view and you pick guarantee, then you could end up with a obstructed ocean view balcony.

How to Avoid It:
Think about what's important to you. Do you want a balcony to enjoy ocean views? A cabin near the elevators for convenience? A quieter location away from nightlife venues? Choosing the right cabin can make a huge difference in your cruise experience.

3. Forgetting Important Travel Documents

One of the most heartbreaking cruise mistakes is arriving at the port without the proper documentation.

How to Avoid It:
Verify passport requirements, birth certificate requirements, and identification rules well before your sailing date. Requirements can vary depending on the itinerary and cruise line. It is highly recommended to have a passport even though they are not required for closed loop cruise (ex. you leave from Galveston port and come back to Galveston port). What if you have a medical emergency in Cozumel and all you have is a birth certificate that will complicate things and could cost you some money. Spend the money and get the passport it could be cheaper in the long run.

4. Not Budgeting for Extra Expenses

While cruises are a fantastic value, not everything is included in your cruise fare.

Potential extra costs may include:

  • Gratuities

  • Specialty dining

  • Excursions

  • Internet packages

  • Beverage packages

  • Spa treatments

  • Souvenirs

  • Some activities on cruise ships

How to Avoid It:
Plan a vacation budget before sailing so there are no surprises once you're onboard. If you booked the cruise on your own, watch You Tube videos of the ship a lot of advisors will explain what costs extra. If you booked with a travel advisor they should let you know the extra costs.

5. Skipping Travel Insurance

Many travelers think they won't need travel insurance until something unexpected happens.

Medical emergencies, weather disruptions, missed connections, and cancellations can happen to anyone.

How to Avoid It:
Consider travel protection to help protect your vacation investment and provide peace of mind.

6. Overpacking

It's tempting to pack everything "just in case," but overpacking can make travel more stressful.

How to Avoid It:
Pack versatile clothing, comfortable walking shoes, swimwear, and cruise essentials. Most cruise lines have casual dress codes for the majority of the sailing. If you have a formal night on your cruise ship and want to dress up don’t forget that formal dress. When we sail there is usually two formal nights we only partake in one and the other one we usually either just get pizza that night or something quick or go to a specialty restaurant we want to try.

7. Trying to Do Everything

Cruise ships offer so many activities that first-time cruisers sometimes feel pressured to do it all.

The truth? You don't have to.

How to Avoid It:
Prioritize the activities that matter most to you. Whether that's relaxing by the pool, exploring ports, attending shows, or enjoying family time, remember that it's your vacation. The mega ships have so much to do on them and there is know way you can fit it all in even on a seven day cruise.
