Galveston has been growing rapidly as a cruise homeport, and 2027 is shaping up to be an especially exciting year. With more cruise lines, more ships, new itineraries, and even more choices for families and couples, you no longer have to automatically look toward Florida to find a great cruise vacation.
Here are some of the biggest reasons Galveston should be on your radar for 2027.
1. Seven Cruise Lines Will Offer Galveston Sailings
One of the biggest changes is simply the amount of choice.
Galveston currently features sailings from major cruise brands including Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises and Princess Cruises. Beginning in October 2027, Margaritaville at Sea is also coming to Galveston, making it the port's seventh cruise line.
That variety is fantastic for travelers because there isn't one cruise line that's perfect for everyone.
Families with young children may be looking for something completely different from a couple celebrating an anniversary. Teenagers may want waterslides and nonstop activities, while another family may prefer great food, entertainment and a more relaxed atmosphere.
Having this many cruise lines sailing from one Texas port gives travelers more opportunities to find the ship that actually fits their vacation style.
2. Margaritaville at Sea Is Coming to Texas
One of the newest announcements for Galveston is the arrival of Margaritaville at Sea in October 2027.
The cruise line plans to operate weekly sailings from Galveston's Cruise Terminal 28. The specific ship and itineraries are expected to be announced separately, so this is definitely one to watch if you're interested in a laid-back, tropical-style cruise experience.
For travelers who want something different from the traditional large cruise lines, this will add another option to the growing Galveston lineup.
3. Disney Cruise Line Is Staying in Galveston
Disney fans have another reason to be excited.
Disney Cruise Line has announced additional fall 2027 and spring 2028 cruises from Galveston, including Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries. Depending on the sailing, destinations can include Disney's private island destinations, Disney Castaway Cay and Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.
That means Texas-area families can experience the Disney Cruise Line experience without automatically having to travel all the way to Florida for their cruise.
For families who love Disney but want the convenience of a Gulf Coast departure, Galveston can be a very attractive option.
4. Carnival Is Bringing Even More Variety
Carnival has had a major presence in Galveston for years, and that isn't changing.
For the 2027–2028 season, Carnival plans to continue operating multiple ships from Galveston, including Carnival Jubilee, Carnival Breeze, Carnival Horizon and Carnival Sunshine. The lineup includes everything from shorter Western Caribbean getaways to longer Caribbean and Carnival Journeys itineraries.
This is particularly helpful for families who want choices.
Maybe you only have enough vacation time for a four- or five-night cruise. Maybe you want a traditional seven-night vacation. Or maybe you're ready for a longer cruise with a more unusual itinerary.
Galveston is increasingly able to offer all of those possibilities.
5. Royal Caribbean Continues to Have a Major Galveston Presence
Royal Caribbean has also invested heavily in Galveston.
The cruise line and port opened a $125 million cruise terminal complex at Pier 10 in 2022, specifically designed to accommodate some of Royal Caribbean's largest ships. The Port of Galveston and Royal Caribbean Group are now discussing plans for an additional future terminal as the port continues to grow.
For families who love big ships, entertainment, pools, activities and plenty to do onboard, Royal Caribbean gives Galveston cruisers another strong option.
6. MSC and Norwegian Have Expanded the Choices Even Further
Galveston's growth isn't limited to the cruise lines that have traditionally dominated Texas cruising.
A new $156 million Cruise Terminal 16 opened in November 2025, welcoming MSC Cruises and supporting expanded Norwegian Cruise Line sailings. The terminal includes a 165,000-square-foot terminal building, parking garage and modern boarding infrastructure.
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings also entered into a long-term agreement with the port, while MSC's arrival introduced yet another major cruise brand to Galveston.
More competition and more ships mean travelers have more opportunities to compare cruise experiences, itineraries, dates and pricing.
7. You Can Reach More Than Just Mexico
When some travelers hear "cruise from Galveston," they immediately think of Cozumel.
And yes, Mexico continues to be a major destination from Galveston—but the options have expanded considerably.
Depending on the cruise line, ship and length of sailing, Galveston cruises can visit destinations throughout the Western Caribbean and Bahamas, with possibilities including Cozumel, Costa Maya, Roatán, Belize, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, Nassau and private-island destinations. Longer and specialty itineraries can offer even more possibilities.
That's why it's important to compare the itinerary along with the ship when you're choosing a cruise.
8. Galveston Can Be an Alternative to Flying to Florida
For travelers in Texas and surrounding states, Galveston can make the beginning and end of a cruise vacation much simpler.
Instead of automatically flying the entire family to Miami, Fort Lauderdale or Orlando, some travelers may be able to drive to Galveston. Others may find flying into the Houston area more convenient depending on where they're traveling from.
Even when airfare is required, having another major cruise homeport gives travelers more options when comparing the total cost of a vacation, not just the cruise fare.
Remember: the cheapest cruise fare isn't always the cheapest vacation once airfare, hotels, transportation, parking and other expenses are added.
9. Galveston Itself Can Become Part of the Vacation
Another benefit of sailing from Galveston is the opportunity to add time on the island before your cruise.
Arriving at least one day before sailing is something I recommend whenever possible, especially when you're flying to your cruise port.
Instead of treating that pre-cruise night as simply a travel day, you can turn it into the beginning of your vacation. Enjoy the beach, restaurants and attractions around Galveston before boarding your ship the following day.
Galveston Is One to Watch for 2027
Galveston has grown into one of the country's major cruise homeports. The Port of Galveston reported a record 3.4 million cruise passenger movements in 2024, and its continued terminal investments show just how much additional growth is being planned.
For 2027 cruisers, the biggest advantage is choice.
